Newspaper Fires Editor For Criticizing Gay Bible

Bob Eschliman is a Christian. He’s also a veteran news editor. And when he decided to write a column on his personal blog objecting to a gay-friendly version of the Bible, Bob was unceremoniously marched out of the Newton Daily News and shoved out the front door.

After a brief investigation, the Iowa newspaper fired Bob and then publicly castigated him in an editorial. They accused him of compromising the reputation of the newspaper. They said what he wrote resulted in the loss of public trust.

So are Shaw Media and the Newton Daily News anti-Christian? Do they employ executives who are religious bigots? Should journalists who endorse traditional marriage simply not apply for jobs?

Bob ran afoul of the newspaper’s bosses by daring to criticize the “Queen James Bible” website. The website sells copies of God’s Word that have been rewritten with a gay friendly slant.

“If you ask me, it sounds like the Gaystapo is well on its way,” Bob wrote. “We must fight back against the enemy.”

Bob wrote those words on April 28. Two days later he was ordered into his boss’s office and placed on indefinite paid leave. On May 5 he was fired.

The following day, John Rung, the president of Shaw Media, penned an editorial ruthlessly attacking Bob.

“The First Amendment does not eliminate responsibility and accountability for one’s words and actions,” Rung wrote. “While he [Bob] is entitled to his opinion, his public airing of it compromised the reputation of this newspaper and his ability to lead it.”

I’d say what’s left of the newspaper’s reputation is about to be severely tarnished.

Wednesday, Bob filed formal charges with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against Shaw Media and the Newton Daily News. Attorneys from Liberty Institute allege the newspaper and its parent company are guilty of religious discrimination and retaliation.

And based on my conversations with Liberty Institute attorneys – they’re going to go after the newspaper like a pit bull going after a pork chop.

“No one should be fired for simply expressing their religious beliefs,” Liberty Institute attorney Jeremy Dys told me. “That’s exactly what happened to Bob. This kind of religious intolerance has no place in today’s welcoming work force. In America, it is against the law to fire an employee for simply expressing a religious belief that his or her employer may not share.”

Dys said Bob was fired for trying to “explain his belief in Holy Scripture along with the definition of marriage.”

“They need to be reminded that people of faith can be employed in public and they do not need to be – as the Eleventh Circuit put it – banished to the broom closets and whispers in the hallways,” Dys told me. “That’s not what religious liberty is about.”

So are Shaw Media and the Newton Daily News anti-Christian? Do they employ executives who are religious bigots? Should journalists who endorse traditional marriage simply not apply for jobs?

I decided to call Shaw Media’s head honcho to get answers to those questions.

Unfortunately, the head honcho did not want to take my call. Instead, he had his secretary (a very pleasant sounding lady) deliver the message.

She said they had not heard of the lawsuit and even if they had Shaw Media would not comment on pending litigation. I received a similar email message from the current publisher of the Newton Daily News.

Bob told me he is pretty torn up over the controversy.

“As a journalist, I know how important the First Amendment is for our country,” he told me. “As an editor, I’ve always felt it’s dangerous for a newspaper to censor anybody’s ideas – whether they agree with them or disagree with them.”

There were a few issues that I had with Bob’s story. First, why was a newsman writing a personal blog? In many newsrooms across the country, such activity is outright banned.

Bob tells me Shaw Media does not have a policy prohibiting personal blogs or social networking sites. When he was hired, Bob told them he had a personal blog and he said he was encouraged to continue his off-the-clock writings.

And then there was the matter of the content. At first glance, it appears Bob was referring to the LGBT community as “the enemy.”

But it turns out – that’s not the case at all. He said he was referring to Satan – not homosexuals.

That’s a valid explanation. In the Christian tradition, Satan is often referred to as the “Enemy.” However, since Bob used a lower case ‘e’ – it implied the LGBT community was the enemy.

“Bob confessed it was a failure on his editorial part,” Dys told me. “He forgot to capitalize the ‘e’.”

During my conversations with Bob he seemed like a stand-up guy. I suspect had the newspaper bosses given him a chance to dialogue about the posting, they could have worked out an amicable and reasonable solution. But it doesn’t sound like the folks at Shaw Media are all that reasonable.

“There will be some who will criticize our action, and mistakenly site Mr. Eschliman’s First Amendment rights as a reason he should continue on as an editor of the Newton Daily News,” Rung wrote. “As previously stated, he has a right to voice his opinion. And we have a right to select an editor who we believe best represents our company and best serves the interests of our readers.”

So for what it’s worth – Shaw Media decided that Bob, a faithful husband and father, a devout and outspoken Christian man, an award-winning journalist – did not represent the values of their company.

Maybe Shaw Media ought to reconsider its values.

It’s a shame a company that exists, thanks to freedom of press, wants to take away a man’s freedom of speech.

THE ECONOMY OF HEAVEN IS GIVING AND RECEIVING July 31

REF:  Luke 6:38

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

COMMENT: This is the most appropriate scripture on giving and receiving. The message is so clear and detailed and therefore all we need is faith in this written word. The words were spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ himself. His teaching is to show us how to get out of poverty. Today I embrace these words in full and I am saying “NO” to poverty. I am waiting for God to respond to the seeds I am planting, and the tithes I am paying.

PRAYER: Thank you because I have released my first seed and have received a reward. I am waiting for the next as I continue to give. God owes nobody any debt.

THE ECONOMY OF HEAVEN GIVING AND RECEIVING July3

REFERENCE: Luke 3:11

John answered, “The man who has two tunics should share with one who has none, and the one who has food should do the same”.

COMMENT: This is an instruction by God through his servant John. The requirement is that we share the little we have with those who have nothing. Giving to the poor has always been a requirement by God.  We cannot ignore the order and claim to be born again. When we give, then we receive. It is like giving more than a loan to God and because God is a debtor to nobody, then He will pay you even more than you release to the poor.

God loves the obedient servant, sustains them and blesses them more and more.

PRAYER: Holy Spirit! Make me a giver always. Provide to me so that I can continue to give.

THE ECONOMY OF HEAVEN IS GIVING AND RECEIVING July 2

REFERENCE Mark 12:41-44
…………  I tell you the truth; this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.

COMMENT: What matters is not the amount given but the percentage of what is available and the willingness to give. The big question is how much has been released from all our available wealth – what percentage? The poor widow gave 100%  of all her wealth. That is why the Lord Jesus commended her because He was also able to see her heart. The heart of the giver is more important than the gift itself. The bible says our hearts are where our treasures are. If you intend to install change in a man, touch his heart.

The poor widow gave all she had to live on hence, the Lord’s comment. I am sure she was later given more than she had released. God is faithful in everything He promises. He does not owe anybody anything. Let us not forget that our wealth and ourselves belong to God.

God is interested in our hearts more than our wealth.

PRAYER: Holy Spirit! Continue to teach us to release to God all we have because He owns us, as well.

Temple Institute Announces Discovery Of Red Heifer In Anticipation Of Third Temple

The rebuilding of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem is a key prophetic event with tremendous significance. In addition to the actual building that is required, a tremendous amount of detail will need to be re-enacted, based on the specific requirements given by God in the Old Testament regarding both the numerous items, laws and rituals required to properly conduct the Temple worship, sacrifices and rites. One such key requirement is the slaughtering of a red heifer for its ashes, which would then be used in an ash water mix as a purification-for-worship prerequisite as recorded in the biblical book of Numbers Chapter 19.

A recent report by by Michael Snyder in
End of the American Dream, explains why this is no mean feat: “A qualified red heifer has not been seen in the land of Israel for nearly two thousand years, and without one it would not be possible to resume Temple worship. But now a candidate has been found that could change everything. The Temple Institute in Jerusalem (dedicated to making preparations for the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple) has released stunning video footage of a red heifer that they believe meets the Biblical requirements.
This red heifer was born in the United States, and the owners of the red heifer contacted the Temple Institute in order to receive instructions about how to care for it. It is hoped that this red heifer will eventually be transported to the land of Israel and be used for the purification of the priests and the vessels that will be used in a rebuilt Jewish Temple”.

The Temple Institute has already successfully assembled other key requirements including: priestly garments made to Biblical specifications, musical instruments played by the Levitical choir, the golden crown of the High Priest, gold and silver vessels used in the incense and sacrificial services, a seven-branched Menorah made of pure gold, a golden Incense Altar and a golden Table of Showbread. They are currently on exhibit in Jerusalem’s Old City Jewish Quarter.

Michael Snyder explains that without the ashes of a red heifer, all of those preparations are in vain: before the Temple can be rebuilt and Temple worship can be resumed, a perfect red heifer must be found. This heifer is expected to also meet the following standards:

• It must never be yoked to work;
• It must never mate;
• It must be completely red—even two black hairs would render it invalid.

The heifer would historically be slaughtered and burned on a pyre, along with a cedar branch, hyssop sprig, and crimson wool. The ceremony took place on the Mount of Olives, opposite the Temple Mount.

A related story published in
WND.com  quotes Institute spokesman Rabbi Chaim Richman saying that the heifer is being raised according to the laws of the Torah at an undisclosed U.S. location. The heifer is said to be an Angus mix was in January and is not being tagged, branded or “used for any activity.” According to Richman, the reason the color of the heifer was to be red was “not for humankind to know…the knowledge the red heifer represents is way, way beyond our spiritual capacities.”

Perhaps not entirely: One revealed significance in the Bible about the color red is that it represents sin. Isaiah 18:1 says: “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. “
Wikipedia.com lists scarlet and crimson as being shades of red, hence red is the primary or parent color.

There are other Biblical comparisons that suggest that the Old Testament red heifer was also in many ways a type or shadow of the blood atonement for our sins in the New Testament or covenant, paid for by Jesus Christ in his sufferings and death before He rose again.
Gospel Herald.com for instance, draws out parallels, some of which are as follows:

• The red heifer was to be "without spot" and without a yoke typifying Christ's voluntary coming to redeem us and His sinless character even though He took our sins as His own (Hebrews 4:15).
• The red heifer was similar to, yet different from, the other offerings for sin. Nevertheless, the purpose was the same. It was a sin offering (just as Jesus who was “made sin”: For He hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).
• The red heifer was a congregational, or corporate, offering (Numbers. 19:1). It was to be offered outside the camp as an impure thing, typifying Christ who was made to be sin and a curse for us. He suffered outside the established order of things (Hebrews 13:12).
• The heifer was to be "totally consumed with nothing remaining but ashes… the burning to ashes represents the total consumption and destruction of sin and sinners (Malachi. 4:1, 3)…He became sin itself in order that He might destroy him who had the power of sin and death (Hebrews. 2:14, 15)."
• The ashes were sufficient for all the people. When a person or a family needed purification, a fresh heifer was not required to be sacrificed. One was sufficient for all, including the sojourning stranger (Numbers 19:10). So the sacrifice of Christ is sufficient for everyone. It is everlastingly efficacious.
• The ashes were stored for all future needs. So the sacrifice of Christ is laid up for us as an inexhaustible fountain of merit to which we have daily access for the purging of our consciences (Hebrews. 9:13, 14; Zechariah. 13:1).
• The red heifer was offered alone. Christ was all alone. There is but one sin-bearer and He trod the winepress alone. He endured the contradiction (hostility) of sinners (those he came to save) against himself, alone (Hebrews. 12:3).

The significance to the salvation of mankind from sin during the Old Testament times when red heifers were sacrificed therefore becomes clear when compared and contrasted to the New Testament.

However despite the significance of the recent red heifer find, from the Bible prophecies yet to be fulfilled, other hindrances to the rebuilding of the Temple still remain. The primary one seems to be the strong Islamic resistance to Jewish buildings around the Temple mount; however the Temple Institute and the many Orthodox Jews working towards this goal remain undeterred.
Ultimately the prophecies will come true and God will undoubtedly take care of any seemingly insurmountable obstacles at the human level. We can count on it for “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? (Numbers 23:19).

So how should we react to the news of the red heifer findings? Perhaps Jesus would answer that question by reminding us of His words to us when on earth:
“Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near (Luke 21:28).”
